Seattle Greens Join the Opt Out Coalition; Adopt Cleveland High School

Posted on September 08, 2005

The Green Party of Seattle is pleased to announce that we have joined a coalition of progressive organizations aiming to limit military recruitors' access to our children.

Not many Seattle parents and students are aware of a provision in the No Child Left Behind Act requiring that our public schools hand our students' private information over to military recruitors.

This is not inevitable, however. Each student or parent has the option to "opt out" of sharing this personal contact information by handing in a form to their school and telling them that they value their privacy and do not want harrassment from recruitors looking for fresh bodies to send to Iraq and Afghanistan to compensate for less than shining recruiting numbers.

To this end, the Seattle Greens have adopted Cleveland High School to inform its students and their parents about their options, the truth behind much of the misleading and one-sided information that the recruitors provide and to inform them of the option of "Opting Out".

The response that local Greens received at Cleveland was overwhelmingly positive and once students and some teachers were aware of our intentions, we were talking to a small crowd of young people who valued their personal information and did not want it shared with the military.

The Green Party of Seattle is currently looking for more volunteers to table at Cleveland High School as a part of the Opt-Out effort there. If you're interested in helping protect our kids from recruitors, please contact Mike Gillis at mikedgillis@hotmail.com or call (206) 755-4262
